There has been plenty of noise about the Facebook pixel and it all sounds really great but what the hell is it, and how do you get it working for you?

According to Facebook themselves, the Facebook pixel is an analytics tool that allows you to measure the effectiveness of your advertising by understanding the actions people take on your website. You can use pixel data to:

  • Make sure your ads are being shown to the right people
  • Build advertising audiences
  • Unlock additional Facebook advertising tools

Now pixels are not new things.  They have been around for years, it’s just there hasn’t been the amount of data available to be crunched until Facebook opened the floodgates to their user base.

A pixel basically drops a cookie (which the Cookie Monster will never do) that will track visitors on your website, which allows you to market to them later on. The key to this is that with the new pixel you can really dig deeper than you have ever before to understand what your potential client is looking at. What pages they view, when they left your page. This can give you amazing insight into what your buyer is doing and then remarketing to them later based on data and not a generalisation. Making your ads on Facebook extremely focused and data driven so that you get the best bang for your buck.

The key to using Facebook advertising to its full potential is understanding your target market. Once you know what your buyer wants, what their behaviours are, you can focus your spending and test your ads for maximum effectiveness.

Now the Facebook pixel was extremely difficult to use back in the day, but they have taken steps to make it user-friendly for the average business owner out there. They have condensed all the different pixels into one that enables you to optimise, retarget and track. Pretty cool if you ask me.

If you haven’t started using the Facebook pixel, I highly recommend you get on board the data train and use it for all it’s worth.
